How do I know if it's time my child needs a tutor? If you child's teacher has mentioned any difficulty. If your child is having difficulty completing homework independently. If your child avoids reading because it's too difficult. If your child reads like a robot, short, choppy, too fast, or too slow to maintain meaning. If your child does not understand what they read, meaning they can't retell, summarize, or answer questions about the text. If your child does not fall into these categorizes it does not mean your child wouldn't benefit from tutoring.
How long will my child need tutoring for? This is dependent on your child and their specific needs as well as your goal for your child. Some parents want to close gaps, while others want something more long-term.
Why is tutoring needed? Aren't they learning this in school? Ofcourse your child is learning to read in school. In most cases you child's teacher is trying everything they can to help you child. Some students need more individualized and frequent instruction to get what they need. Some students have reading difficuluties that go beyond the regular classroom instruction.
How will you know how to help my child? There are a variety of literacy assessments to help pinpoint which area of reading your child is in need of support. For instance, some students can read the words on the page, but have no idea what they read. Other students cannot read the words on the page. In either case or another case, there are ways to determine where your child will benefit.
Do you work with students with Dyslexia? Yes! Students with Specific Learning Disablities benefit from 1:1 or small group tutoring with direct explicit and customized instruction.
Do you tutor in anything other than reading? At this time we are only tutoring in reading.
What age should my child be able to read? Children should be able to read to some degree independently when leaving kindergarden. In some cases, this may take longer. All children are on their own path to reading. Usually, school districts have their own benchmark grade level reading goals. Schedule a consultation and I can give you feedback.
How frequently will my child need tutoring? This depends on your child and their needs. For children who are in need of intensive support the minimum is two sessions per week. How much will this cost? Consultations are free. Assessment sessions are $175. Individual tutoring sessions are $80 per session. Sessions are billed monthly in advance.
