Back to School Must Haves1 3 Teacher-Loved School Supplies for 3rd & 4th Grade
As both a classroom teacher and tutor, parents often ask me, "What school supplies should I get?" While every classroom has its own supply list, these are some of my favorite items that help students stay organized, build independence, and make learning a little easier throughout the year. 📖 1. Book LightA book light makes it easy for children to read anywhere at bedtime, in the car, or while traveling. It's a simple way to encourage daily reading without disturbing others. Great for: Independent reading, family trips, and bedtime reading. ✏️ 2. Expo MarkersDry erase markers are one of the most-used supplies in classrooms. They're perfect for practicing spelling words, solving math problems, and completing reusable learning activities at home. Great for: Homework, math practice, spelling, and reading activities. ✏️ 3. Ticonderoga PencilsThese have always been my favorite classroom pencils. They sharpen well, write smoothly, and tend to last much longer than many inexpensive brands. Great for: Everyday classroom work and homework. 📝 4. Index CardsOne of the most versatile learning tools! Students can use them for math facts, vocabulary, sight words, spelling practice, or studying for quizzes. Great for: Flashcards and quick review. 📓 5. Composition NotebookComposition notebooks are perfect for writing journals, reading responses, and keeping important notes all in one place. Great for: Writing practice, reading journals, and creative stories. 🎒 6. Pencil CaseA sturdy pencil case helps students keep pencils, erasers, scissors, and markers organized so they're ready to learn. Great for: Staying organized throughout the school year. ✏️ 7. Cap Erasers Cap erasers fit right on the end of pencils and are easy for students to use. Great for: Daily classroom work and homework. 📌 8. Sticky NotesSticky notes are one of my favorite learning tools. Students can mark important pages, jot down questions while reading, or leave reminders. Great for: Reading comprehension, organization, and studying. 🔖 9. BookmarksBookmarks help students keep their place while making reading a little more fun. Let your child choose one they love to make reading even more enjoyable. Great for: Daily independent reading. 🖍️ 10. CrayonsEven in upper elementary grades, crayons are still used for projects, diagrams, posters, and creative assignments. Great for: Classroom projects and creative activities. 💻 11. Lap DeskA lap desk creates a comfortable workspace for reading or homework on the couch, floor, or while traveling. Great for: Homework, reading, and flexible learning spaces. 📚 12. Chapter Books (see post below for some recommendations) The best way to become a stronger reader is to read books you actually enjoy! Choose books that match your child's interests and reading level to build confidence and a love of reading. Great for: Building vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading. 🎧 13. HeadphonesHeadphones are used frequently in elementary classrooms for educational websites, audiobooks, and independent learning activities. A comfortable pair can make a big difference. Great for: Technology time, listening to audiobooks, and focused learning. Final ThoughtsThe best school supplies aren't always the fanciest, but they're the ones that help children feel prepared, organized, and confident.
